🏈 Chiefs vs. 49ers Preview 🏈
This Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will meet in Las Vegas for Super Bowl 58 where the Chiefs will look to be the first team to ever take back-to-back Super Bowl’s, while the 49ers hope to get revenge for their loss to the Chiefs at Super Bowl 54. The Chiefs have remarkably found their way back to another consecutive Super Bowl after defeating the Dolphins and upsetting both the Bills and Ravens to win the AFC title. The 49ers enjoyed a bye through the first round and then conquered the Packers followed by the Detroit Lions in a massive comeback from a 17 point deficit. San Francisco are coming into this matchup as slight 1.5 point favorites.
The Chiefs have managed to tally 23 points per game in the playoffs, and have taken 3 straight playoff wins to get here despite being just 4-4 against playoff teams overall this year. The Patrick Mahomes/Andy Reid playoff combination is undoubtedly something to be reckoned with. The Chiefs defense has also been stellar throughout the playoffs, holding teams to only 12.6 points per game so far. The same cannot be said for San Francisco’s playoff defense, and if the 49ers give up a lot of points to the Chiefs in the first half like they did with Detroit, it’s not likely they will get the same lapse to exploit that Detroit provided them with in the second half of the NFC championship.
The 49ers are absolutely a powerhouse team and despite having two close games prior to this Super Bowl, they have some of the best offense in the NFL between receivers like Deebo Samuel and running back Christian McCaffrey who scored 21 touchdowns this season. 49ers QB Brock Purdy may not have the star-power of the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes or the playoff experience by any means, but he’s at the helm of a team that does not fail to produce offensively when it counts, and plain and simple: wins, a lot.
The Kansas City Chiefs are quite difficult to fade in this situation despite the fact that the 49ers seem to have what it takes on paper to end their back-to-back dreams. The 49ers should be well matched to run the ball down the field with their exceptional rushing offense against the Chiefs lagging rushing defense, and they should (under normal circumstances) have a defense full prepared and capable of stopping Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense. Nevertheless, the Chiefs are a tremendously popular pick among the public for good reason: Mahomes has proved time and time again that he can find a way to get it done in the playoffs no matter the circumstances. Brock Purdy on the other hand has not shown he has the superstar prowess that makes him exceptional in big games. For that reason, my gut says backing the Chiefs as underdogs is the best bet for Super Bowl.
